The latest data from the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency shows crime is continuing to spiral out of control under the Allan Labor Government’s watch across the state, and the Shepparton is no different.
The Nationals’ Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, said that the data reveals the Greater Shepparton Local Government Area has experienced a 23 per cent increase in criminal incidents, including increases in residential aggravated burglary, motor vehicle theft, escalating retail theft and break-ins targeting businesses, and as well as serious assaults.
“The latest statistics prove that the Allan Labor Government has no answers for the crime crisis in Victoria and are ignoring the cries from our local police and the community calling for more resources to keep our community safe.
“I recently met with our local police who are doing an incredible job under enormous pressure, but they simply do not have the resources or support that they need.
“I am calling on the State Government to immediately boost frontline police numbers in Shepparton.
“We need to ensure that our police are there when needed. Invest in crime prevention initiatives, and back tougher measures to tackle repeat offenders and tougher measures to keep the community safe.
“Victorians have had enough of this Government’s soft and weak approach on crime and our communities deserve to feel safe and deserve better.
“A Liberal and Nationals Government will deliver a strong plan to tackle crime.
“We will introduce Break Bail, Face Jail, ensuring real consequences for repeat and youth offenders. We will legislate Jack’s Law, giving police and PSOs the powers and technology they need to remove knives from criminals before they can be used.
“We will also invest in Restart and Youthstart Programs to steer young people away from crime through discipline, education, counselling and community support.
“Labor can’t manage crime, can’t manage community safety and Victorians are paying the price.”
