The Nationals Member for Shepparton District Kim O’Keeffe has raised critical safety concerns regarding the pedestrian crossing at Kialla West Primary School in Parliament last week.
Addressing the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, Ms O’Keeffe highlighted the need for improved safety measures at the school’s crossing, citing a horrific accident that occurred five years ago, which resulted in serious injuries to a family and a student of the school. Yet, nothing has been done.
“The safety of our children and families at Kialla West Primary School must be a priority,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“There has been a significant increase in traffic, especially given the high percentage of the state’s trucks driving through the area.
“It is so important that the government take immediate action to prevent any further accidents.
“The crossing is located on a major highway and thoroughfare and has seen an increase in traffic flow due to new housing developments in Kialla, making it a concern for the community.”
Ms O’Keeffe also mentioned the planned developments for the site, including the construction of a new kindergarten, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
This addition will increase the volume of school traffic, and the government will need to accommodate the region’s growth.
“This situation not only highlights the immediate need for improved safety measures at the Kialla West Primary School but also stresses the need for the Shepparton Bypass,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“Accommodating for the growth of our region is essential, and ensuring the safety of our residents, especially our children, is non-negotiable.”
