The Nationals Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, is calling on the Allan Labor Government to ensure ongoing funding for Neighbourhood Houses across the Shepparton District.
“Our Neighbourhood Houses are the backbone of our communities, providing essential support and services to the community often during the most challenging of times,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“From emergency food relief to educational programs and occasional childcare, they offer a lifeline to many, particularly in times of crisis.
“I have worked closely with many of our local Neighbourhood Houses, and I have seen first-hand the enormous role they play in supporting the community.”
The severe underfunding of Neighbourhood Houses has led to a situation where many of them are struggling to meet the growing demand for their services.
“In the aftermath of challenges such as the pandemic and the floods, as well as the ever-increasing cost of living, the need for the support services offered by Neighbourhood Houses has only intensified,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“I have been contacted by a number of Neighbourhood Houses who are feeling incredibly concerned that funding will be reduced at a time when demand for their services has increased.”
Ms O’Keeffe is urging the Government to commit to their ongoing support and funding to ensure these vital community hubs can continue to operate effectively.
“Guaranteeing sustainable funding for Neighbourhood Houses is not just an investment in these organisations but an investment in the health and wellbeing of our communities,” she said.
“The Government must take immediate action to ensure our Neighbourhood Houses can continue to provide the essential services our communities rely on.”
