The Nationals’ Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, has backed a new plan that will see students across the Shepparton electorate receive the support they need to succeed at school under the Nationals’ and Liberals Successful School Starters Program.
Under the new plan, access to specialist support will be delivered to assess, refer and diagnose neurodiverse students when they start primary school.
“This is a first of its kind program in the country, the Successful School Starters Program will commence in every Victorian prep classroom from Term 1, 2028, with occupational therapists and speech pathologists embedded within the existing Primary School Nursing Program.
“The Successful School Starters is about making sure that children can get the support they need early so they have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
“For many families, navigating assessments and specialist services can be very overwhelming. This new program will make that process easier by helping parents get the answers they need sooner,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
The Successful School Starters Program forms part of the Nationals’ and Liberals Excellence in Education Plan, supporting students, parents and teachers across Victoria.
Students requiring further specialist review and diagnosis will also be eligible for a $500 subsidy towards their initial special appointment, helping reduce out of pocket costs for families under the new plan.
“Every child deserves the chance to start school with the support they need to thrive, not be left behind while waiting for a diagnosis.
“By identifying learning and development needs earlier, we can give children the best possible start and helping parents get the answers they need but also ensuring that teachers have the tools to support every student in their classroom.
“This new plan is a practical and compassionate reform that puts Victorian students first by helping set them up for success from the start.”
