The Nationals’ Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, has said the Allan Labor Government’s latest announcement on gas delivers nothing more than a con.
Despite the Premier’s latest spin, the truth is clear: Labor is doubling down on its anti-gas agenda.
“The government is continuing to wage its ideological war on how Victorians cook, heat their homes, and manage their energy bills,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
Since January 1 2024, the Allan Labor Government has banned gas connections for all new homes requiring a planning permit and for all new residential subdivisions, blocking families in new estates from choosing gas entirely.
Old gas hot water systems must still be replaced with electric appliances from 2026. From March 1 2027, new bans will hit commercial properties, rental homes and public housing.
“Labor’s plan isn’t balanced, it’s not affordable, and is certainly not based on long term choice.
“Power company AusNet has warned that Labor’s agenda will increase infrastructure costs, driving up bills for households already under pressure.
“Labor cannot guarantee gas supply to industry. They cannot guarantee affordable and reliable supply. Placing Victorian industry, manufacturing and agriculture at extreme risk.
“Under Labor, rising energy costs will continue to hurt Victorian households and businesses.
“The Nationals and Liberals have time, and time again told the government that its war on gas is bad for all Victorians, and these changes are not about managing perception rather than listening and engaging with the community.
“Labor’s flawed and bungled energy roadmap risks the security and supply of energy to Victorian households.
Ms O’Keeffe said that Victorians deserve real choice, real affordability, and real energy scrutiny – not an ideological crusade dressed up as climate policy.
“The Nationals and Liberals will always back energy choice for Victorian households, not ideological government-imposed mandates under the Allan Labor Government.
“Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage the state’s energy transition, and all Victorians are paying the price.”
