The Victorian Government has acknowledged the urgent need for housing for the homeless in Shepparton by announcing a new 15-unit housing complex to support those experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough.
The Nationals’ Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe has been a strong advocate for addressing the growing homelessness issue in the Shepparton District and has welcomed this project, which is the first of its kind in Regional Victoria for people who are sleeping rough.
“This is a positive step acknowledging and addressing our housing shortage for the most vulnerable in our community, but more needs to be done to address our housing crisis,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“It is devasting to see the rising numbers of people sleeping rough and everyone deserves a place to call home.”
The new complex will provide safe and stable accommodation while offering wrap-around services to help residents access support services, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities needed to rebuild their lives.
“I have seen firsthand the impact of those who are homeless and sleeping rough in our community. Many are disconnected from society and often don’t have a bank account, Medicare card or family support,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“Housing is an opportunity to connect and help break the cycle of homelessness. A home brings stability, security and safety, and will help get their lives back on track.”
Homelessness is a significant issue in Greater Shepparton, with 436 people currently without a home of their own on any given night—a rate higher than in many other parts of Victoria. In Shepparton, approximately 59 out of every 10,000 people are experiencing homelessness, compared to 42 per 10,000 across the state. Since 2016, homelessness in Shepparton has increased by 17.2%.
“I will continue to advocate for more investment in housing and programs that address the root causes of homelessness in our region,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
Construction is expected to start in January 2025, with the project set to be completed by the end of the year.
