The Nationals’ Members for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, and Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, have called for the establishment of Community Planning Groups across the Moira Shire to improve representation for residents.
With the upcoming Local Government elections in October and with Moira Shire not being included, residents are increasingly concerned about how their voices will be heard.
Mr McCurdy said that without councillor representation, the community felt disconnected and missed the direct connection they once had.
“It is very concerning to think that the Moira Shire will not have councillor representation considered until the 2028 local government elections,” Mr McCurdy said
“Democracy is a critical part in ensuring the voices of all communities are heard, particularly in regional areas.
“Having served as a Deputy Mayor of Moira Shire in 2008/9, I know just how beneficial it is to have strong community feedback.”
Mrs O’Keeffe has been assisting the residents of Numurkah with some local matters.
“One thing that keeps coming up is their need for better communication and connection with the council,” Mrs O’Keeffe said.
Mrs O’Keeffe said Community Planning Groups, which would consist of local residents who would meet regularly with the council to discuss key issues and town priorities, would ensure that the community’s voice is heard and help to bridge the current communication gap.
“During my time in local government, I saw firsthand the benefits of having community planning groups,” Mrs O’Keeffe said.
“We were given valuable insights from those who know their towns best.
“It’s so important that we work out the best solution moving forward.
“I have had positive communication with the Moira Shire Council, and hopefully, a positive outcome can be achieved for the community.”
