The Nationals’ Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, has urged the Allan Labor Government not to proceed with proposed cuts of more than $15 million per annum to Victoria’s 31 Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs), including the Goulburn Murray LLEN.
The warning follows the release of the much-awaited Silver Review into Victoria’s Public Service, which has been kept from the public for the last six months, recommending the Allan Labor Government cut critical funding to LLENs across the state.
“For the government to even consider cutting funding to Victoria’s 31 Local Learning and Employment Networks is deeply concerning.
“Creating pathways that support young people, and their education, training and employment should be an absolute priority.”
Ms O’Keeffe noted that a Parliamentary Inquiry is currently examining how to strengthen student pathways to in-demand industries, with LLENs playing a vital role in delivering these opportunities.
The Legislative Assembly’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee is investigating how students can be better supported with advice and pathways into in-demand jobs, including through TAFE and other vocational pathways.
As Deputy Chair of the Committee, Ms O’Keeffe said LLENs are needed now more than ever.
“We know that our LLENs do a tremendous amount of work in the community, connecting young people with the education, training and employment opportunities they need to succeed.
“Maintaining funding for these networks is critical. Any cuts would have devasting and direct impacts on LLENs and on rural and regional communities such as the Goulburn Valley.
“The Allan Labor Government must ensure that there are no funding cuts to LLENs, including the Goulburn Murray LLEN and that young people continue to receive the support they need to access the best education, training and employment opportunities.”
